There are plenty of benefits that come with starting a business, including having more flexibility and freedom with your schedule. For many individuals, however, the process of becoming an entrepreneur is a bit intimidating because it comes with so many questions.
The good news is, there are several opportunities and resources available for veterans these days that can make the path a little easier to travel. Start by reaching out to local businesses that are veteran-owned so you can network; forging a connection with a company like CLR Marine will give you some support as you start your journey. Then, think about how you can protect your business and grow your ideas at the same time.
Start with a sustainable idea
There are tons of business ideas out there, but only one will be perfect for you and your specific needs and skills. If you have the time and patience, you can build a company from the ground up based on something you enjoy doing, such as woodworking or baking. However, you might consider looking into a franchise, which includes benefits such as built-in branding that already has a customer following and a handbook for daily business operations. This is a great way to ease into the business world because it takes some of the pressure off your shoulders.
Look for funding
Once you have an idea of what sort of business you want to start, it’s time to look for funding. There are several resources available for veterans, but there may only be a few that are right for you. Decide whether you want to look for a loan or a grant, then do some research on which ones you qualify for. Keep in mind that some grants may depend upon the size of your business and whether you plan to have employees, while others factor in your years of service or whether you are living with a disability. It’s also important to note that there are many other resources available to help you cut down on costs and save money throughout the year.
Get some benefits
One resource available to all business owners is the formation of an LLC, or Limited Liability Company. This is a great way to add some protection to your company as well as some tax benefits, as Florida LLC owners aren’t required to pay state taxes on their business income. There are some other tax requirements, however, so it’s essential to find out the rules and regulations that are specific to the state of Florida. Read over the specific steps and guidelines for forming an LLC, and consider using a formation service that can help you get through the process with no issues.
It’s important to stay organized during this process, so create an area to safely file paperwork related to your business. Keep it separate from your personal files so there will be no confusion come tax-time.
Expand your education
One final consideration to make when you’re ready to start a business is how to expand upon your education. As a veteran, you already have an advantage in the business world due to your leadership skills and the ability to adapt to change, so now might be the time to focus on learning more about building a successful website or how to create a marketing plan. There are plenty of free educational opportunities for veterans online, including business classes and workshops, but you can also connect with other small business owners to learn how they’ve handled getting set up. Look for networking opportunities on social media and research more about how to create targeted ads on platforms like Facebook and Instagram to reach more customers.
Starting a business can be stressful, but you can minimize frustration by giving yourself plenty of time to set things up. By getting all your ducks in a row and staying organized, you can bring your business plan to fruition.

TZ Navigator Weather Routing Module - Digital Download
Navigate Safely & Efficiently
Like all sailors know, the most direct route isn't always the best one. The new Routing Module now combines its revolutionary algorithm allowing you to calculate the optimal sailing route based on weather forecasts, currents, polars of your yacht and your own navigation style, with the powerful features of the former Advanced Routing Module to make one product.
More performance in routing calculation
The new Routing module offers accuracy and flexibility for the most demanding sailing conditions making the software routing calculation easier. It allows advanced sailors to manually control and adjust the weather file parameters in order to get more accurate results. It also introduces the variability notion, helping the skipper to identify the particular moments in the navigation where strategy choices are critical.
Routing Module Features:
Waves are used for routing computation along with wind and currents
One click comparison between several routes and animations to evaluate multiple scenarios
Option to pass a waypoint, leaving it Port or Starboard during multi waypoint routing computation
Alternative Routing
Routing variability calculation and display
Weather File Adjustment
Its use is more intuitive and user-friendly for recreational boaters, while offering multiple setting options for experienced sailors
Routing variability calculation & display
After having created a routing you can display on chart the variability.Variability's value allows identifying quickly important variation of wind direction and strength which require from the skipper a supplementary expertise of his forecasts, routing and sourcing files.
The variability is equal to 100% if wind direction and strength are stable
It will decrease to 80% if the routing shows important variations of the wind direction and strength. It indicates as well the weather transition for example a ridge with a gradient decreasing of pressure thus of wind
Variability is symbolized in the Routing tree by a more or less strong display density (as it is shown in the picture above beside).
Areas colored in Black indicate weather transitions. A very dense black corresponds to a variability < 70 % and it is thus necessary to cross it in the shortest after an analysis more refined and recalculating a new routing before changing criteria as well as modifying parameters and files sources
Light areas show the "Corridors" where weather conditions are more stable depending to forecasts
The ability to overlay both together variability and Sailset allows you to clearly view each transition of different ways (as ridge) across the routing. The Variability value is indicated in each line of the Routing center which corresponds to a time period of the weather routing.
Weather File Adjustment
It is possible to adjust the wind forecast data values, in order, for example, to take into account the hours or wind direction or wind speed, which has been prevailing in the zone for several days.
Increase or decrease the wind speed (%): move the cursor along the slide bar to modify to increase or decrease the percentage
Increase or decrease the wind speed (value): enter directly a value
Change Weather File Time: enter a specific time HH:MM
Change Weather File in Latitude and Longitude
Change Weather File Direction
Increase or decrease in percentage Waves and/or Current values

As a side note: I thought everyone would be interested in reading this news release. Auctioning water in our lifetime…who would have thought it.
First Calif. auction will occur this fall (09/24/2009)
In what is believed to be an unprecedented move, a Southern California water agency plans to auction off enough water in the Chino Basin this fall to supply about 70,000 homes for a year.
"Water in general has always been a very low-priced commodity, and I think the reality is, it's going to start catching up with other utilities. It's going to fluctuate with markets," said Ken Manning, chief executive of Chino Basin Watermaster, a quasi-public entity that manages the basin. "Whether that's right or wrong, I don't know. I just know where it's going."
Water sales are not uncommon in the state, especially in times of drought. But the water auction appears to be the first of its kind.
The Chino Basin is one of the largest groundwater basins in Southern California.
So far, there are expected to be three types of bidders, according to Manning: local water agencies, Southland developers who under state law must show there is enough water to supply new projects and private investment groups that deal in natural resources.
Chino Basin Watermaster plans to auction a total of 36,000 acre-feet, sold in four blocks, in the online auction, which will take place in November.
Manning said he believes the water will go for between $800 and $1,000 an acre-foot, or roughly $30 million. Underground storage in the basin will cost another $30 million.
"We think we're offering a reliable product. It's in the ground. So it will demand a higher price," he said (Bettina Boxall, Los Angeles Times, Sept. 24). – JK

Tighten up security before you shop on Cyber Monday.
Make sure all software on your computer and mobile device is up-to-date, including your OS, browser, and other apps. And if you don't already have it, install a cybersecurity program on your desktop and mobile device (whether it's a Mac or PC) that prevents malware infection to insure maximum coverage.
Never Ever use debit cards to shop online.
Do you want to give cybercriminals direct access to your bank account?
Banks are not like credit card companies. They will bounce your mortgage payment, your car payment and any other bill you have. It usually takes about ten days or more to get things straightened out. By then you have real bills that are bouncing.
Make sure you are on a secure connection.
Look for the padlock icon to the left of the URL when you go to check out. The URL should read “https” and not just “http.
Do Not open Cyber Monday emails with attachments, Dump them in the garbage.
Cyber Monday emails with attachments, especially zip files, are super suspect that they have malware attached to them. Delete them immediately.
Watch out for social media scams, especially on Facebook
Go directly to a store's website instead of using search engines to look for deals.
Delete any Pop-Up it could be redirecting you to a fake site
