Information About the PSS Shaft Seal

PSS-Shaft-Seal

This PSS Shaft Seal page summarizes the existing source information on electrolysis risk, ceramic sealing surfaces, maintenance items, shaft size range, and how the mechanical face seal works.

Key source details

  • The source describes the PSS Ceramic Shaft Seal as using a durable ceramic sleeve instead of stainless steel against the carbon face.
  • The ceramic sealing face is described as non-conductive, helping control current flow at the sealing face and metal surfaces.
  • The page points shoppers to the PSS Maintenance Kit and PSS O-Ring Kit for keeping a selected PSS shaft seal in working order.
  • The source lists the PSS Shaft Seal as available for shafts from 3/4" to 6-1/2" (20mm to 150mm).

How the seal works

The PSS Shaft Seal is described as a mechanical face seal. The seal is created between the rotating stainless-steel rotor and the stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange is attached to the front side of the bellows with hose clamps, while the back end of the bellows fits over the stern tube and is also secured with hose clamps.

The stainless-steel rotor is fitted on the shaft in front of the carbon flange. Compression of the bellows maintains contact between the rotor and carbon flange, while O-rings recessed into the collar bore seal the rotor to the shaft.
