Yanmar X0520505-01 Mechanical Seal
The Yanmar X0520505-01 is the factory mechanical seal used in Yanmar marine diesel sea water pumps that use this part. It is the part that keeps raw water out of the bearing on the pumps built this way, and it is capable of a much longer life than a lip seal provided it is treated correctly.
Check the shaft and the housing bore before fitting. A step, a burr or corrosion in the bore stops the fixed face seating square, and a seal that is not square is a seal that leaks.

Q: Can I touch the sealing faces during assembly?
Avoid it. Skin oil and any particle left on the face is enough to hold it open. Handle the seal by its edges and keep the faces clean and wet.
Q: Should I grease the faces?
No. Water is the intended lubricant. Grease on the faces interferes with the film they depend on, though a light smear on the elastomer to ease assembly is normal.
Q: My new seal leaked immediately. What went wrong?
Usually the fixed face was not seated square in its bore, or a face was contaminated during fitting. Check the bore for burrs and corrosion before trying again.
Q: How does it compare with a lip seal?
It will last considerably longer when kept wet and clean, and it is far less tolerant of dry running and grit. Neither type survives a pump that is run without water.
