The Yanmar 24421-173208 is the genuine oil seal for Yanmar marine diesel sea water pumps that use this part. It runs against the turning pump shaft and keeps raw water on the water side of the pump, away from the bearing behind it.

These pumps are usually fitted with more than one seal separating the water side from the bearing side. Replace them as a set when the pump is apart - they have the same age and the same hours, and reaching them is most of the work.

Q: Why are there two seals in the pump?
One keeps water in, the other keeps bearing lubrication in, and the space between them vents through the drain so a failure shows outside instead of contaminating the bearing.

Q: How do I fit it without damage?
Support it squarely and press on the outer face, never on the lip. Most seals that leak straight after a rebuild were damaged or cocked on the way in.

Q: How often should seals be replaced?
Whenever the pump is apart far enough to reach them, and immediately if there is any sign of water tracking past them.

Q: There is salt crusting under the pump. Is the seal gone?
That is the classic sign. Water is passing the seal and evaporating on the outside. Deal with it early, because the next thing it reaches is the bearing.
