Slingers are usually replaced because they have corroded thin, split, or become loose on the shaft. Any of those and they stop doing their job, and the next thing water reaches is the bearing. Different metals corrode at different rates in salt water, and the slinger is deliberately the sacrificial, inexpensive one of the pair.
