Q: Can I repack a rough bearing instead?
No. Once the races are corroded or brinelled, no amount of grease restores them. It is a replace item.
Q: How should it be pressed on?
Square, and pressing only on the race being fitted. Driving a bearing through its balls damages the races before it has turned a revolution.
Q: Does bearing condition affect pump output?
Indirectly but significantly. A worn bearing lets the shaft move, which changes the impeller clearances and loads the seals unevenly.
Q: How do I know the bearing has gone?
Turn the shaft by hand with the impeller out. Any roughness, notchiness or play means it is finished. A rumble that rises and falls with engine speed is the same message from the other end.
