Yanmar 22252-000350 Snap Ring
The Yanmar 22252-000350 is the genuine snap ring for Yanmar marine diesel sea water pumps that use this part. It locates a bearing, a seal or a shaft component axially - a small spring steel ring seated in a groove that stops the part it retains from moving along the shaft or out of its bore.
Retaining rings are replaced rather than reused because they lose their grip. Spreading one to get it off stretches it slightly, and a ring that no longer sits hard against the bottom of its groove can work its way out under vibration. When it does, the bearing or seal it was holding is free to move, and the damage that follows is out of all proportion to the cost of the ring.

Q: Why not reuse the old ring?
Spreading it to remove it stretches it. A ring that no longer sits hard in its groove can work out under vibration, and whatever it was retaining then moves.
Q: How do I know it is properly seated?
Run a fingernail round it after fitting. It should be fully down in the groove the whole way round with no section standing proud.
Q: Does the ring have a correct way round?
Many do - a stamped ring has a sharp edge and a rounded one, and the sharp edge faces the load. Fitted backwards it holds considerably less.
Q: What happens if one comes out in service?
The bearing or seal it retained is free to move along the shaft, which destroys clearances and usually the pump with them.
