Q: Is a retainer needed with it?
On the pumps built this way, yes - the retainer holds the fixed element square in its housing, and a damaged retainer lets the seal move under pressure.

Q: Why does a mechanical seal fail after running dry?
The faces rely on a film of water both to seal and to carry heat away. Without it they run metal to metal, overheat in seconds and craze, and once crazed they cannot be recovered.

Q: Can I touch the sealing faces during assembly?
Avoid it. Skin oil and any particle left on the face is enough to hold it open. Handle the seal by its edges and keep the faces clean and wet.

Q: Should I grease the faces?
No. Water is the intended lubricant. Grease on the faces interferes with the film they depend on, though a light smear on the elastomer to ease assembly is normal.
