The Yanmar 124070-42400 is the factory pulley used in the sea water pump fitted to 2GM and 3GM Series engines. It is a simple part that quietly costs cooling performance as it wears.

Corrosion is the other reason to replace one. A pitted groove abrades the belt continuously and shortens its life, and in salt air a pulley can be well past its best while the rest of the pump is sound.

Q: My belt squeals under load. Is the pulley the cause?
It is a strong candidate, along with belt tension and a stiff pump. A worn groove cannot grip however tight the belt is.

Q: Should I fit a new belt with it?
Yes. The old belt has worn to match the old pulley, and it will not seat correctly in a new groove.

Q: How tight should the belt be?
To the engine specification. Overtightening to cure slip on a worn pulley loads the pump bearing and shortens its life considerably.

Q: Can cooling problems come from the drive rather than the pump?
Absolutely. A slipping belt gives normal cooling at idle and falls behind under load, which looks exactly like a tired impeller.
