The Yamada 771589 is a factory air inlet mesh used in NDP-5 and NDP-15 Series pumps. It is an easy part to ignore and a surprisingly common cause of a pump that has lost performance for no obvious reason.

What clogs it tells you something. Oil and dirt mean the air supply needs filtering; pumped product in the exhaust means a diaphragm has split and the air motor has been passing product for a while, in which case the muffler is the least of the problems and the pump needs opening up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How often should it be replaced?
Whenever it is visibly dirty or the pump has lost speed for no other reason. On a clean dry air supply it lasts a long time; on a dirty one it can need attention every few months.

Q: There is product in the exhaust. What does that mean?
A diaphragm has split and the pump has been venting product into the air side. Replace the diaphragms and check the air motor internals, not just the muffler.

Q: Can I run the pump without a muffler?
It will run, and it will be extremely loud. It also leaves the exhaust port open to whatever is in the surrounding air, which then gets drawn back into the motor.

Q: Why does the pump slow down in cold weather?
Expanding exhaust air cools sharply and can ice up the exhaust. A pump that recovers after standing is usually icing rather than failing.
