Yamada 771216 Ball Guide, polypropylene for NDP-20
The Yamada 771216 is the genuine ball guide for NDP-20 Series pumps with polypropylene wet ends. It sits above the check ball and limits how far the ball can lift, keeping it captive over its seat so that it drops back onto the same spot every time.
Guides wear where the ball touches them, and abrasive product erodes the openings the fluid passes through. As the clearance grows, the ball is allowed more lift and more sideways movement, which means it lands off center and starts wearing the seat unevenly. A guide with visibly rounded or eroded contact points should be replaced with the ball and seat.

Q: What happens if a guide breaks?
The ball loses its limit stop and the broken pieces travel with the flow. They usually end up jammed in another check valve or in the discharge manifold, so a pump that suddenly stops delivering after a guide failure needs a full wet end inspection.
Q: How much ball lift is correct?
Enough to pass full flow and no more. That is what the guide sets, which is why guides are specific to the model and are not interchangeable between pump sizes.
Q: Can I run the pump without a guide?
No. The ball will not reseat consistently, output will be erratic and the seat will be hammered out of shape quickly.
Q: Does the guide material have to match the wet end?
It should be compatible with the fluid and with the temperature. Yamada supplies guides in materials matched to each wet end build for exactly that reason.
