Weinman H1936-16-K2 Neoprene Shaft Deflector 1.31 in ID

This is the neoprene deflector Weinman lists as part H1936-16-K2 at 1.31 in inside diameter. It is one of the cheapest parts on the pump and one of the most consequential, because it is all that stands between a weeping shaft seal and a ruined bearing.

Deflectors harden, crack and lose their grip on the shaft. Once one has split or will turn by hand, liquid escaping past the seal runs straight down the shaft and into the bearing, and the bearing then fails for a reason that looks mechanical and is not. Replacing a part this cheap at every teardown is an easy decision.

Fit it without stretching it over a sharp step or a keyway edge, and make sure it is seated at the position the Weinman assembly drawing shows. A deflector sitting too close to the bearing cap can rub, and one sitting too far forward throws liquid where it is not wanted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is it worth fitting if the seal is new anyway?
Yes. Mechanical seals weep a little as they bed in and they do not last forever, and the deflector is the backstop for the day the seal starts to go. Leaving it out removes the only protection the bearing has.

Q: Does the material matter?
It does. Neoprene is specified for its grip, its temperature range and its resistance to the liquids these pumps handle. A generic rubber ring of the same bore will harden or swell at a different rate.

Q: How should spares be stored?
Cool, dark and dry, and not stretched over a hook. Elastomers age on the shelf, so rotate stock rather than keeping one part for years and finding it hard when you need it.

Q: How do I know the old one needs changing?
Try to turn it on the shaft by hand. If it moves, or if the material has gone hard, glazed or cracked, it is no longer doing its job. There is no partial credit with a deflector - it either grips and spins or it does not.
