Weinman A7460-C9 Bronze Step Shaft Sleeve

The Weinman A7460-C9 is the genuine Weinman bronze step shaft sleeve. A shaft sleeve is a sacrificial wearing surface: it slips over the shaft and takes the abrasion and corrosion that would otherwise attack the shaft itself, so a cheap part wears out instead of an expensive one.

Run your fingernail along the sleeve where the seal sat. If it catches, the sleeve is finished. A new mechanical seal fitted over a grooved sleeve is the single most common reason a rebuilt pump leaks again a month later.

Fit this alongside the seal rather than on its own. Renewing one without the other leaves a new surface running against a worn one, which is how a rebuild ends up being done twice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I get a tight one off?
Work with heat and a puller rather than with force alone, and support the assembly so nothing is bent in the process. Weinman service literature gives the method for the specific pump; improvising here is how shafts get damaged.

Q: Does this need to be replaced every time the pump is opened?
Not automatically. Inspect it, and renew it whenever you are fitting a new mechanical seal to a pump with meaningful hours on it. The part is inexpensive and the cost of getting it wrong is a second strip-down.

Q: What if the shaft underneath is already grooved?
That is a different and more serious repair. The shaft either needs building up and re-machining or, on a close coupled pump where the shaft belongs to the motor, the motor needs attention. A new sleeve will not bridge a damaged shaft.

Q: Is the material a free choice?
No. Bronze is what Weinman specified here, and it is chosen for how it wears against the mating part and how it stands up to the liquid. A harder or softer alloy changes which part of the pair wears out first.
