Tuthill P941-7 Viton Lip Seal for Rotary Lobe Pump Shafts
The Tuthill P941-7 is a Viton shaft lip seal for Tuthill rotary lobe process pump shaft and faceplate positions. The shaft seal is the part that keeps the pumped fluid inside the pump and off the drive, and it is the component that decides how long a rebuild lasts. It is a small part with an outsized effect, since a seal that is wrong for the fluid will harden, shrink or swell long before anything else in the pump wears out.
Viton lip seals are specified where the gear case and faceplate positions run hotter than a standard nitrile seal will take, and Tuthill publishes them as usable in place of the standard seals up to the 525 degree F band. A rotary lobe pump carries several of them, so check the parts list for the count before ordering a single seal. A seal is not a reusable part. Once the faces have run in, lifting and refitting the same seal leaves a leak path that will show up within hours of the pump returning to service.

If the pump is already stripped, yes. The labor to open a pump twice costs far more than the seal.

No, but a tapered plastic sleeve is published for fitting seals over a tang shaft so the lip or the face is not cut on the shaft edge.
Q: How do I know the seal has failed rather than a gasket?

Q: Can I fit a different elastomer?
Only if the dimensions match the published alternative. Tuthill lists neoprene, Viton and EPR versions of the same seal under different dash numbers, and those are interchangeable. A seal from another size is not.
