Tuthill P701-98-77 Viton O-Ring for 2C Series Gear Pumps
The Tuthill P701-98-77 is a genuine Viton O-ring for Tuthill 2C Series cast iron gear pumps, housing plug position. Fluoroelastomer O-rings are specified where nitrile will not survive the fluid or the temperature, and they hold their sealing force across a far wider band than a standard rubber ring. The dash number is the size, so it has to be read off the parts list rather than guessed from the ring that came out.
The size 2 C Series pumps list this O-ring against the housing plug, one per pump, and ship from the factory with the Buna-N version as standard. Moving up to the Viton part is the usual step when the fluid or the temperature is beyond what nitrile will tolerate. Fit it dry into a clean groove or with a light smear of the fluid being pumped, never with a grease that is incompatible with the elastomer, and take care not to roll or twist the ring as the joint is closed.

Q: Will a hardware store ring do the job?
Dimensionally perhaps, chemically often not. Generic rings are commonly nitrile, which is the material the Viton part was chosen to replace.
Q: Can I reuse the old O-ring?
No. A ring that has been compressed and heated takes a permanent set and will not recover enough to seal a second time.
Q: What does the number after the dash mean?
It is the elastomer. Tuthill publishes 57 for neoprene, 77 for Viton and 87 for EPR against the same size, so the middle number is the size and the last is the material.
