Tuthill P601-9 Ball Bearing for Rotary Lobe Pump Shafts
The Tuthill P601-9 is a genuine ball bearing for Tuthill rotary lobe process pump bearing carriers. In a rotary lobe process pump the bearings are mounted in their own carriers outside the product stream, so they run in gear case oil rather than in whatever is being pumped. It is the design detail that lets these pumps handle suspended solids and aggressive chemicals without the bearings paying for it.
The HD Series design puts the bearings outside the product stream in their own carriers, two per pump, so they see only the gear case oil rather than the pumped fluid. Tuthill lists standard and high temperature grades under the P601 number, and the high temperature versions are what allow the published 525 degree F band. Bearings are replaced in pairs and always with the shaft clearances reset afterwards, because the bearing position is what holds the impellers off the housing and the faceplate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is the bearing greased or oil fed?
That depends on the build. Grease fittings are listed on the parts list, and gear case oil serves the timing gear end.
Q: Should both bearings be changed at once?
Yes. A new bearing running against a worn one will not hold the shaft where the clearance setting expects it.
Q: How do I fit it without damaging it?
Press on the inner race only. Never hammer a bearing on and never press through the outer race.
Q: Do the clearances need resetting afterwards?
Yes. The bearing carriers are shimmed to set impeller clearance, and that has to be checked whenever a bearing is disturbed.
