Tuthill P500-26-S4 Stainless Impeller Key for HD Series Pumps
The Tuthill P500-26-S4 is a genuine impeller key for Tuthill HD Series stainless steel rotary lobe process pumps. A key is the only thing carrying torque between a shaft and whatever is mounted on it, and in a rotary lobe pump that torque has to stay exactly in phase. It is one of the cheapest parts in the pump and one of the few where a sloppy fit has immediate mechanical consequences.
Tuthill builds the HD Series in both ductile iron and 316 stainless, and the stainless pumps take stainless internals throughout rather than the steel parts used in the iron pumps. The parts list calls for two impeller keys per pump, one for each impeller. Dress any burr in the keyway before the new key goes in, and never file the key down to make it fit. A key that has been reduced to clear a damaged keyway will simply roll under load.

Q: Can I use a standard key from stock?
Only if the dimensions are identical. Length and fit both matter here, and a generic key cut to approximate size is a common cause of a repeat failure.
Q: How do I tell if the old key is worn?
Look for rounded corners, a polished band on one face, or side to side movement in the keyway with the key in place.
Q: Why stainless rather than steel?
Because the pump it goes in is stainless. Mixing a steel key into a stainless build puts dissimilar metals in contact and gives corrosion somewhere to start.
Q: What if the keyway itself is damaged?
Then the shaft or the hub needs attention. Fitting a new key into a spread keyway will not hold, and the damage will get worse quickly.
