Tuthill P500-26 Gear Key for HD Series Rotary Lobe Pumps
The Tuthill P500-26 is a genuine gear key for Tuthill HD Series rotary lobe process pump timing gears. A key is the only thing carrying torque between a shaft and whatever is mounted on it, and in a rotary lobe pump that torque has to stay exactly in phase. Everything the pump does depends on the impellers staying in the position the timing gears put them in, and the keys are what enforce that.
Gear keys lock the timing gears to the drive and driven shafts, and the parts list calls for two of them. Because the timing gears are what hold the impellers apart inside the housing, a worn or loose gear key shows up as impeller contact rather than as a simple rattle. Dress any burr in the keyway before the new key goes in, and never file the key down to make it fit. A key that has been reduced to clear a damaged keyway will simply roll under load.
