Tuthill 4108-V-CC-A-7 Internal Gear Pump End 1 in NPT Tang Shaft
The Tuthill 4108-V-CC-A-7 is a size 5 L Series internal gear pump end delivering a nominal 12.9 GPM through 1 inch NPT porting. It ships as a pump end only, without a motor, so it can be fitted to an existing drive or built into a new package. Pumping action comes from a rotor and an idler gear running either side of a crescent shaped partition cast integral with the cover. With only two moving parts there is very little to wear, and the flow is smooth and close to pulsation free.
This build carries the internal relief valve option, supplied as standard with a spring covering 55 to 120 PSI and set to give full bypass at 70 PSI. The relief valve is over pressure protection only and is not a flow control device, so it must not be left bypassing continuously or the heat that builds in the pump cavity will damage the internals. The adjusting screw has to sit on the suction side of the pump when it is installed. Rotation is counterclockwise as viewed from the shaft end, and because this build carries the relief valve it is direction specific rather than bi-rotational. The drive end is a A type tang shaft. The 4108 is built on the size 5 L Series wet end, which uses the larger 1 inch NPT porting and the 5LE rotor, idler and cover assembly rather than the half inch parts used on the smaller sizes. These pumps are built for fluids with lubricity and must not be used on plain water, corrosive liquids or abrasive slurries, and they must never be run dry.
Key Features
- Cast iron internal gear design with only two moving parts, a rotor and an idler gear
- Nominal capacity of 12.9 GPM through 1 inch NPT inlet and outlet ports
- Self priming, with the series designed to pull a minimum of 25 inches of mercury
- Internal relief valve set at 70 PSI and field adjustable through the supplied spring range
- Viton mechanical shaft seal and Viton O-ring, the code 7 elastomer option
- Wide speed range of 300 to 3600 RPM suits direct drive, belt drive and geared arrangements
- Supplied as a pump end only so it can be coupled, adapter mounted or fitted straight to equipment
Applications
- Machine tool, gearbox and bearing lubrication systems
- Burner oil and fuel oil transfer and circulation
- Low pressure hydraulic power units and control circuits
- Lubrication circuits on air compressors, gas compressors and engines
- Heat transfer oil and quench oil circulation
- Original equipment builds where a compact bare pump end is needed

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will it handle water or a water based coolant?
No. The internals need the lubricity of an oil. Plain water, corrosive liquids and anything abrasive will take the bushings and the rotor out quickly, whatever the elastomer specification is.
Q: Does this pump come with a motor or a mounting foot?
No. It is a bare pump end. A motor, an adapter or a coupling and a mounting foot are all ordered separately, and the L Series foot is a listed option rather than part of the pump.
Q: What happens if it is run dry?
The shaft seal faces and the bushings rely on the pumped fluid for lubrication and cooling. A dry run of even a few seconds can glaze or crack the seal faces, and a longer one will pick up the bushings and score the rotor.
Q: How do I know which way the pump has to turn?
Rotation is quoted looking at the pump from the shaft end. Models without a relief valve will run either way, but any model with the V relief valve option is built for one direction only and must not be reversed.
