Tuthill 1LA9-7 Viton Mechanical Shaft Seal for L Series Pumps

The Tuthill 1LA9-7 is a Viton mechanical face seal for Tuthill L Series internal gear pumps in the 00, 0, 1 and 2 sizes. The shaft seal is the part that keeps the pumped fluid inside the pump and off the drive, and it is the component that decides how long a rebuild lasts. Fitting a genuine seal of the right elastomer is the difference between a pump that runs for years and one that weeps within a month.

The L Series seal is built as a spring and washer assembly, a rotating carbon face, a lapped stationary face and an O-ring. On the 00, 0 and 1 sizes it is backed up by a snap ring, while the 2 size locates against a step machined into the shaft. Companion seals are offered in neoprene as 1LA9-5 and in EPR as 1LA9-8 when Viton is not the right elastomer for the fluid. Replace the seal any time the pump is opened, even if the old one looks serviceable, because a seal face that has bedded in against one shaft position will not reseat in the same track.

Key Features

  • Genuine Tuthill mechanical face seal in Viton
  • Direct replacement for L Series 00 to 2 builds
  • Fluoroelastomer construction for high temperature and aggressive fluid service
  • Sold as the seal alone so it can be fitted during a routine strip down
  • Keeps the pumped fluid off the drive, the coupling and the base
  • The single highest wear item in a rotary gear pump

Applications

  • Shaft seal replacement during a scheduled pump overhaul
  • Stopping a leak at the pump shaft without a full rebuild
  • Changing elastomer to suit a new fluid or a higher temperature
  • Lubrication and fuel oil transfer pump service
  • Compressor and gearbox oil circulation pump service
  • Spares holding for equipment that runs continuously

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is any special tool needed?
No, but a tapered plastic sleeve is published for fitting seals over a tang shaft so the lip or the face is not cut on the shaft edge.

Q: How do I know the seal has failed rather than a gasket?
A seal leak shows at the shaft, between the pump body and the drive end, and it usually gets worse as the pump warms. A gasket leak shows along a joint line and tends to be steady.

Q: Can I fit a different elastomer?
Only if the dimensions match the published alternative. Tuthill lists neoprene, Viton and EPR versions of the same seal under different dash numbers, and those are interchangeable. A seal from another size is not.

Q: Does the seal come with its O-ring?
The O-ring is a separate listed item on the parts list. It is cheap, it is always disturbed when the seal is changed, and it should be replaced at the same time.

Not sure this is the right part? Send us a Picture of the Pump Plate on your pump and the CLR Marine team will confirm the correct mechanical seal.
