Tuthill 10504100 Vented Pipe Plug for HD Series Gear Case
The Tuthill 10504100 is a genuine vented pipe plug for Tuthill HD Series rotary lobe process pump gear case. A vented plug is not an ordinary plug with a hole in it. It lets the gear case breathe as the oil warms and expands, while keeping dirt and splash out of the case. It costs very little and it is the sort of thing that is easiest to fit while the pump is already apart.
This is not an ordinary plug. The vent lets the gear case breathe as the oil warms, and a solid plug fitted in its place will pressurize the case and push oil out past the shaft seals. The parts list calls for one per pump at the gear case cover. Fit it with the sealant or tape specified for the service and do not overtighten. A tapered thread wound in too far will stress a cast housing, and the crack that follows will not show up until the pump is back under pressure.

It is worth doing while the pump is open. They have all seen the same hours and the same fluid.
Q: Can I fit a solid plug instead of the vented one?
No. Blocking the vent lets pressure build in the gear case as the oil warms, and that pressure pushes oil out past the shaft seals.
Q: Does it need thread sealant?
Tapered pipe threads normally do. Use a sealant or tape suited to the fluid and the temperature, and keep it off the first thread.
Q: How tight should it go?
Firm, not forced. Overtightening a tapered plug in a casting is a recognized way to crack the casting.
