Roper Pump P10-178 Packing Gland for 3611 to 3622
The Roper P10-178 is the packing gland for 3600 Series pumps in the 3611 through 3622 range, the right angle port frames in the 11, 17 and 22 sizes fitted with a packed stuffing box. It is the follower that rides over the drive shaft and loads the packing rings against the shaft and the box bore, and the nuts on its studs are the operator adjustment that sets how hard that load is applied.
Roper builds these pumps with graphite packing as standard, with other materials available for high temperature service, mildly corrosive product and food compatible duty. Whatever the material, the set is meant to run with a slight seepage that carries heat away from the shaft. When a gland has been pulled down hard to chase a drip, the rings glaze, the shaft picks up a burnished band and the leak comes back worse than before. Check the gland nose for a bell mouthed lip while the box is open, and look at the shaft under the packing area, because a new set of rings will not seal against a shaft that has already been grooved.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: My pump has a mechanical seal. Does this gland apply?
No. This gland belongs to the packed box arrangement. On a 3600 model number the second digit tells you which you have, and a mechanically sealed pump uses a different set of parts entirely.
Q: How many rings go into the stuffing box?
Use the count given for your frame rather than filling the box until it is full, and stagger each joint about ninety degrees from the one below so no two ends line up.
Q: Should the gland be pulled up square or can it sit at a slight angle?
Square, every time. Measure the gap at both studs as you tighten. A cocked gland loads one side of the rings and leaves the other loose, which is the usual reason a fresh set leaks from one point.
Q: What is the flush port on the side of the box for?
It feeds clean liquid or lubricant to the lantern ring in the middle of the packing set. On abrasive or hot service that flush is what keeps grit out of the box and heat out of the rings.
