Roper Pump N43-1 Standard Packing Set for 3611 to 4622
The Roper N43-1 is the standard packing set for 3600 Series packed box pumps across the 3611 through 4622 range. It supplies the rings that go into the stuffing box around the drive shaft, where they are compressed by the gland into contact with the shaft and the box bore. Roper supplies graphite as the standard packing material, with other materials offered where the duty involves high temperature, mildly corrosive liquids, or a need for food contact compatibility.
Packing is meant to leak a little. That slight seepage is what lubricates the rings and carries away the heat generated where they rub the turning shaft, and a box that has been tightened until it is bone dry is a box that is cooking its packing and burnishing the shaft. Fit the rings one at a time, seating each one fully before the next goes in, and stagger the ring joints about ninety degrees apart so no two ends line up to form a leak path. If the pump has a lantern ring, it must go back in its original position so it stays aligned with the flush port. Expect to readjust the gland once or twice over the first hours of running as the new set beds in.

Q: How much leakage should I aim for once it is bedded in?
A slow, steady drip rather than a stream, and a shaft that stays cool to the touch. Chasing the last drop is what destroys packing sets.
Q: Do the old rings have to come out completely?
Every one of them, including any hiding at the bottom of the box. Topping up an old set with one new ring is why so many boxes never seal properly again.
Q: What tool removes packing from a deep box?
A flexible packing extractor with a corkscrew tip. Screwdrivers and picks score the box bore and the shaft, which creates the very leak path you are trying to remove.
Q: Should the shaft be turned by hand after packing?
Yes, before the pump is started. It should turn with noticeable drag but without locking. A shaft that cannot be turned by hand means the gland has been pulled down far too hard.
