The Roper N34-97 is a conversion kit that takes a 3600 Series pump from the packed box arrangement to the mechanically sealed arrangement, in the 11, 17 and 22 sizes. In Roper model numbering the second digit of the figure number is the shaft sealing code, so a 3611 is the packed build and a 3711 is the mechanically sealed build of the same pump. This kit is what moves a pump from one to the other without replacing the case, the gears or the shafts.
The reason to convert is usually a change in what the pump has to handle or in what the site will accept. Packing is designed to weep slightly in normal service, and on a product that cannot be allowed to reach the floor, or in a plant where housekeeping and emissions are audited, that controlled leak stops being acceptable. A mechanical seal runs without visible leakage and needs no periodic adjustment, which also removes the routine of tending a gland. Before converting, make sure the shaft in the sealing area is in good condition, since a shaft grooved by years of packing will not give a mechanical seal the surface it needs.

Q: What should be checked on the shaft before converting?
