Roper Pump N3-177 Plain Bronze Faceplate Assembly for 3611 to 4722
The Roper N3-177 is a plain faceplate assembly with bronze bearings for 3600 Series pumps in the 11, 17 and 22 sizes, covering the 3611 through 4722 range. The faceplate is one of the three main castings in a 3600 Series pump, bolting to the front of the case and carrying two of the four sleeve bearings that support the pumping gears. Plain means it has no relief valve built into it, so the pump relies on external overpressure protection or on a relief valve fitted elsewhere in the system.
Supplied as an assembly, the plate arrives with its bearings already fitted and located, which removes the two things that most often go wrong when a faceplate is rebuilt on the bench: bearings pressed in out of square, and grooving that ends up misaligned with the liquid passages. Large hardened steel dowel pins locate the faceplate to the case so the gear bores line up exactly, and those pins should be left in place while the plate is lifted straight off rather than levered at a corner. A faceplate is worth replacing outright when the inner face has been deeply scored by a passing solid or by gears that dropped as their bearings wore.

Q: Can a plain faceplate be swapped for a relief valve version later?
On these frames the relief valve lives in the faceplate, so changing the plate is how the capability is added. Confirm the port arrangement and rotation match before ordering.
Q: Does the faceplate decide which way the pump turns?
Not on its own. A 3600 Series pump runs equally well in either direction, though a relief valve protects in one direction only and has to be positioned for the flow direction in use.
Q: Do I need new dowel pins?
Only if they are bent or the holes have become bell mouthed. Sound pins should be left undisturbed, since they are what holds the bore alignment between plate and case.
Q: How do I know the old plate is beyond saving?
Run a straight edge across the inner face. Light polishing is normal wear, but a groove deep enough to catch a fingernail means the running clearance can no longer be held.
