Roper Pump G5-257 Long Bronze Bearing for 3611 to 4722
The Roper G5-257 is the long bronze sleeve bearing for 3600 Series pumps in the 11, 17 and 22 sizes, across the 3611 through 4722 range. A 3600 Series pump carries four sleeve bearings, two supporting each gear shaft, and they are not all the same length. The long bearing takes the position where more journal area is needed to hold the shaft steady, and mixing a long and a short bearing up at assembly leaves one shaft under supported and the other standing proud of its bore.
Roper specifies a wear resistant high lead bronze as the standard bearing material, rated for service to around 400 degrees Fahrenheit, with iron bearings offered for abrasive liquids and carbon for thin non-abrasive ones. What makes these bearings work is the grooving cut into them: the pumped liquid is drawn through the grooves and does the lubricating and the cooling, which is exactly why running a gear pump dry destroys the bearings as quickly as it destroys the seal. When a bearing has been allowed to wear, the gear it supports drops in the bore and starts to rub the case, and at that point the case and the gears come into the repair as well.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I tell the long bearing from the short one at assembly?
Measure them. They are easy to tell apart side by side but almost impossible to judge singly, so lay the old parts out in the order they came off and match the new ones to them.
Q: Should all four bearings be changed together?
It is the sensible approach. Leaving one worn bearing in place puts the shaft out of true and the fresh bearings then take the misalignment.
Q: Do the bearings need pressing in with any particular orientation?
The grooving has to line up so liquid can reach the whole bearing face. Note how the old ones sat before they come out and press the new ones in square to the same alignment.
Q: What does bearing wear look like on the gears?
A bright rubbed band around the outside diameter of the gear teeth where they have started to touch the case bore. Once that appears, the case needs checking before the pump goes back together.
