The Roper G5-139 is the bronze journal bearing for A Series gear pumps in the 06 through 40 displacement sizes. Bronze journal bearings are the standard build on the A Series, alongside cast iron housings, hardened steel shafts and ductile iron gears, and they are what holds each gear shaft concentric in its bore while the pump develops pressure.
On a compact pump the tolerances are tight and the margin for bearing wear is small, so these bearings are often the first thing to tell you that a pump has been asked for more than it should have been. Excessive pressure, a partially closed suction, or repeated dry starts all show up as a bearing that has picked up material from the shaft or gone oval in the loaded direction. Replace them in sets so the shaft stays square, and inspect the shaft journals at the same time, because a new bearing running on a scored shaft will be worn out again in short order.

Q: How do I know a bearing is worn without measuring equipment?
Fit the shaft into the bearing by hand. Any perceptible side to side rock is already too much on a pump this size, and a bright polished stripe along one side of the bearing confirms it.
Q: Does the pump have to come off its mount to change these?
The head has to come apart, but on most A Series arrangements the bearings can be reached without disturbing the base. Support the pump so nothing hangs on the shaft while it is open.
Q: Is a bronze bearing right for every liquid?
Not always. Abrasive product and some chemistries suit other bearing materials better, and Roper lists alternatives for exactly that reason.
Q: What happens if only one bearing is replaced?
The shaft sits slightly out of true between a new bearing and a worn one, and the new bearing takes that misalignment as an edge load. Change them as a set.
