Roper Pump G41-43 External Retaining Ring

The Roper G41-43 is an external retaining ring, the sprung circlip that drops into a groove turned in a shaft and stops a bearing, spacer or gear from walking along it. It is one of the smallest parts in a gear pump and one of the least forgiving, because everything it holds is located by the single shoulder the ring presents. If the ring is not fully seated in its groove, the component it restrains gains axial play, and that play turns into hammering as the pump loads and unloads.

Retaining rings are designed to be fitted once. Spreading a ring to get it over a shaft works it beyond its elastic limit, so a ring that has been removed has almost always lost some of its grip and will sit loose when it goes back. Use proper ring pliers rather than screwdrivers, check that the ring snaps fully home all the way round, and make sure the groove itself is clean and undamaged, since a groove with a rolled edge will let even a new ring climb out under load. Fitting a fresh ring at every teardown costs very little next to a bearing that has been allowed to move.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I reuse the ring that came off?
It is poor practice. Removal stretches the ring past the point where it returns to its original diameter, so a reused ring grips less and is far more likely to lift out of the groove.

Q: Which way round does the ring go?
Stamped rings have a sheared side and a rounded side. The rounded side faces the load so the sheared edge sits square against the groove wall, which is where the ring gets its holding strength.

Q: The groove looks slightly rounded at the edge. Is that a problem?
Yes. A rolled groove edge lets the ring cam outward under axial load. The shaft needs attention before a new ring will hold reliably.

Q: Do I need a special tool?
Ring pliers with the correct tip size are worth having. Levering a ring off with screwdrivers marks the shaft, distorts the ring and is how most grooves get damaged in the first place.
