The Roper G4-140 is the Viton version of the complete mechanical seal for mechanically sealed 3600 Series pumps in the 11, 17 and 22 sizes, spanning the 3711 through 4722 model range. It is the seal to reach for when the elastomer, not the faces, is the limiting factor. Viton holds its properties at temperatures and against chemistries that swell, harden or attack a nitrile secondary seal, which makes it the usual choice on hot oil, aromatic solvents and many chemical duties.
Choosing the elastomer is a decision about the product and the temperature, not about quality. A Viton seal in cool clean fuel service buys nothing over the Buna equivalent, while a Buna seal in hot aromatic service can be stiff and leaking within weeks. Where the two are identical is in how they must be handled. Keep the lapped faces covered until the moment they go together, install without grease on the faces themselves, and turn the pump by hand before starting to confirm nothing is binding. If the pump can ever be started against a closed valve or a dry line, fix that first, because a few seconds of dry running will destroy any seal regardless of elastomer.

Q: How do I know whether I need Viton or Buna?
Work from the product and its temperature rather than from what was in the pump last. If the fluid is heated, aromatic or chemically active, Viton is the safer specification.
Q: Does Viton change the pressure or speed limit of the pump?
No. The elastomer changes chemical and thermal tolerance, not the hydraulic rating. The pump limits stay exactly where the model was rated.
Q: Can I mix a Viton seal with Buna case gaskets?
It is not ideal. If the fluid is aggressive enough to need Viton at the shaft, the other elastomers in the same pump usually need reviewing too.
Q: What should I check if a seal has failed twice in the same pump?
Look past the seal. Coupling alignment, pipe strain pulling on the casing, cavitation and a bearing with play all destroy seals and none of them are cured by fitting another one.
