The Roper G4-101 is a complete Buna mechanical seal for 3600 Series pumps built with a mechanical seal in the 11, 17 and 22 sizes, covering the 3711 through 4722 model range. Complete means the whole seal is supplied together, rotating assembly and stationary seat, so the pair is lapped and matched rather than assembled from parts of different ages. Roper specifies a mechanical seal wherever product leakage is unacceptable, and under reasonable conditions it outlasts a packed box while needing no adjustment at all.
The Buna elastomer suits general purpose service with petroleum fuels, lubricating oils and similar liquids. Most mechanical seal failures are installation failures rather than material failures. The faces are lapped flat to within a fraction of a wavelength of light, so a fingerprint, a speck of grit or a moment resting face down on a bench can be enough to start a leak path. Handle the faces by the outside diameter only, wipe them with a lint free cloth right before assembly, never run the seal dry even for a few seconds of test rotation, and make sure the seal chamber is vented so the faces are wetted before the pump takes load.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can a mechanical seal be fitted to a pump that was built with packing?
Yes, but it takes more than the seal itself. The stuffing box parts have to change with it, which is what the Roper conversion kits are for.
Q: How long should this seal last?
In clean service on a correctly aligned pump, years. Life is cut short by dry running, abrasives in the product and coupling misalignment far more often than by the seal wearing out.
Q: Is a faint weep at start up normal?
A few drops as the faces bed in and wet themselves is not unusual. A steady drip, or any leak that grows rather than clears within the first minutes, means the seal needs attention.
Q: Does the shaft finish under the seal matter?
Very much. The secondary elastomer has to seal against the shaft as well as slide along it, so a pitted or fretted shaft will leak even with a perfect set of faces.
