Roper Pump G17-71 TFE Viton Lip Seal for 2835 L
The Roper G17-71 is the TFE and Viton lip seal for the 2835 L pump, the lip sealed build of the 2835 Series. That series was designed specifically for thick product, handling liquids up to one hundred thousand SSU at standard motor speeds, with capacities to about 11.3 gallons per minute and pressures to 75 pounds per square inch. The seal materials follow from the duty: a PTFE sealing element resists the chemical attack and the elevated temperatures that come with heated product, and a Viton element handles aggressive fluids that would swell a nitrile lip.
Lip seals are the right choice on viscous service for a reason that is easy to overlook. Product such as roofing compound, molasses or resin tends to set up while a pump sits idle, and a mechanical seal can have its faces glued together by that film. A lip seal simply breaks free and keeps running. What it will not tolerate is a shaft that has been allowed to wear under the lip, or a seal driven in cocked. Inspect the shaft each time, support the seal on its outer case as it is pressed home, and be aware that PTFE lips are stiffer than rubber and need a lead in chamfer or a fitting sleeve so the lip is not folded back on installation.

Q: What does the L in 2835 L mean?
It is the shaft sealing code in the 2835 figure number. L is the lip sealed build, M is the mechanically sealed build and P is the packed build, so the letter tells you which sealing parts your pump takes.
Q: Will a standard nitrile lip seal do the same job?
Not on the duty this seal was chosen for. Nitrile softens and swells against many of the heated and chemically active products these pumps handle, which is exactly why the PTFE and Viton combination is specified.
Q: Any special care fitting a PTFE lip?
Yes. PTFE has far less give than rubber, so use a fitting sleeve or make sure the shaft has a smooth lead in chamfer, and never force the lip over a sharp keyway edge.
Q: Should the pump be warmed before starting on thick product?
On heavy product it helps a great deal. Bringing the jacket or line heat up first lets the pump turn against a thinner liquid and keeps the starting torque off the seal and the drive.
