Roper Pump G14-338 Complete Buna Mechanical Seal for F Series F50

The Roper G14-338 is a complete Buna mechanical seal for the F Series F50 pump. The F Series is the high pressure end of the Roper gear pump range, working to around 425 pounds per square inch with cast iron housings, hardened steel gears, precision ground steel shafts and flanged bronze journal bearings, and the F50 sits in the middle of that family at roughly 0.050 gallons per revolution of displacement.

High discharge pressure changes what is asked of a shaft seal. The pressure behind the seal presses the faces together harder, so face loading, squareness and the condition of the shaft all matter more than they would on a low pressure transfer pump. Fit the seal complete so the faces are a matched pair, check that the seal chamber is clean and free of old gasket debris, and turn the pump over by hand before it is coupled to confirm there is no binding. Buna is the standard elastomer on the F Series and suits the filtration, burner supply and bearing lubrication duties these pumps are usually bought for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does the 50 in F50 refer to?
It is the displacement code. In the F Series figure number the digits after the F give theoretical displacement, so the F50 is a larger swept volume per revolution than an F35 and smaller than an F75.

Q: Does high discharge pressure shorten seal life?
It can if the pump is run at the top of its range continuously. Keeping the relief valve correctly set and avoiding dead heading does more for seal life on an F Series than any component change.

Q: Should I replace the bearings while the pump is open?
Worth inspecting at least. A bronze journal bearing that has opened up lets the shaft orbit, and that orbit is transmitted straight into the seal faces.

Q: Is graphite packing an option instead?
The F Series is offered with graphite impregnated Teflon packing as well as a mechanical seal, but the two arrangements use different housing parts, so it is not a straight swap.
