Roper Pump D441-492 Case Gasket for 3635 to 4758
The Roper D441-492 is the case gasket for the larger frames of the 3600 Series, covering the 3635 through 4758 model range in the 35, 43, 48 and 58 displacement sizes. These are the high capacity pumps in the family, moving up to 468 gallons per minute at pressures to 125 pounds per square inch, and the joint this gasket seals is correspondingly long and carries real bolt load.
On a large frame gear pump the case gasket is doing quiet structural work as well as sealing. It keeps the faceplate, case and backplate stacked at the dimension the dowel pins and gear widths were machined for, so an incorrect or reused gasket shows up as a loss of volumetric efficiency long before it shows up as a leak. When you have the pump apart, inspect the gear end faces and the plates for the polished band that says the clearance has already closed up, and fit fresh gaskets at both joints so the stack height ends up where it started.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why does a large frame pump lose capacity after a rebuild?
Nine times out of ten the gasket thickness changed. The bigger the gears, the more a small clearance error costs in slip, so the correct cut gasket matters more on a 3658 than it ever did on a 3611.
Q: Do the dowel pins have to be driven out to split the case?
No. The pins locate the plates to the case and should stay where they are. Lift the plates straight off them so the alignment is preserved for reassembly.
Q: Should the case bolts be re-torqued after a few hours of running?
Checking them once the pump has reached working temperature is good practice on the large frames, particularly on hot service, because the stack settles as the gasket relaxes.
Q: What causes scoring across the plate faces?
Usually a solid carried through with the liquid, or a bearing that let a shaft drop. Light scoring can be dressed flat, but a deep groove means the plate is no longer a sealing surface and needs to be replaced.
