The Roper 3611HBRV is a 3600 Series heavy duty gear pump with a tapped port case, an outboard ball bearing and an integral relief valve. At size 11 it displaces 0.11 gallons per revolution, delivering up to 84.8 gallons per minute at its 750 revolutions per minute maximum, through 2 inch NPT tapped ports, at differential pressures to 125 pounds per square inch. It comes standard fitted with graphite packing and bronze bushings.
The relief valve is what separates this build from the plain HB, and it is worth understanding what kind of protection it gives. Roper uses an inverted poppet design, deliberately built without the close fitting guides that can clog and hold a valve shut at the moment it is needed. On the small 3600 frames the spring ranges are an A spring covering roughly 20 to 80 pounds per square inch and a B spring covering 81 to 125, with a tempered steel spring recommended to about 350 degrees Fahrenheit and a stainless spring above that. The valve protects in one direction of rotation and can be repositioned to either side of the pump to suit the flow direction, so confirm which way your installation turns before it is piped in.

Q: How is the relief valve set?
With the adjusting screw against a gauge, with the pump running and the discharge throttled in a controlled way. Counting turns is guesswork, because spring rate and installation both vary.
Q: Which spring do I need?
The one that brackets your working pressure rather than the one with the widest range. A valve set near the bottom or the top of its spring range is harder to hold steady.
Q: My system can reverse flow. Is this valve enough?
Not on its own. This style protects in one direction only, and Roper offers a bi-directional valve build for reversing duty on the 11 through 48 sizes.
Q: Can the valve be used to trim flow?
No. Running over the valve recirculates liquid inside the pump and heats it quickly, which damages the packing and the bearings. Use speed to control flow instead.
