The Roper 2AM12 is an A Series external gear pump, foot mounted, with an integral relief valve and a mechanical shaft seal. Size 12 displaces 0.013 gallons per revolution, which gives 23.4 gallons per minute at the 1800 revolutions per minute maximum, through 1-1/4 inch NPT ports, at pressures to 150 pounds per square inch.
What separates the 12 from the 08 is a larger gear set in the same port size, so the pump moves noticeably more liquid without the pipework changing. That matters in practice when an existing line is being uprated: the flow goes up, the velocity in the pipe goes up with it, and the suction side is what usually complains first. If you are stepping up from a smaller pump on the same piping, check that the inlet line is still generous enough to feed the new displacement without pulling the suction pressure down, particularly on a cold or slightly viscous liquid. Construction is the familiar A Series arrangement of cast iron housing, ductile iron gears, bronze journal bearings and a hardened steel drive shaft.

Q: Can I slow the pump down to get a lower flow?
Yes, and it is the right way to do it. Displacement is fixed per revolution, so speed is the honest flow control on a gear pump, where throttling the discharge only raises pressure.
Q: Does a higher flow need a bigger suction line?
Often it does. The pipe that comfortably fed a smaller pump can pull the suction pressure down once flow rises, and the pump will show it as noise and lost delivery.
Q: What horsepower will it need?
That depends on the pressure and the viscosity as much as on the flow, so size the driver against the duty rather than the pump. Thick liquid at high pressure asks for a great deal more than thin liquid at low pressure.
Q: Will it handle a liquid with fine solids in it?
The A Series is built for clean fluids, and bronze bearings run on the product itself. Where solids are unavoidable, the suction needs proper straining and the bearing material needs reviewing.
