Roper Pump 2835M Viscous Liquid Gear Pump with Mechanical Seal and Relief Valve
The Roper 2835M is the mechanically sealed build of the 2835 Series, the range Roper designed specifically for liquids that are too thick for an ordinary transfer pump. The M in the figure number is the seal code: L is the lip sealed build, M is the mechanical seal, P is packing. The pump handles product up to 100,000 SSU at standard motor speeds, displacing 0.0063 gallons per revolution for 11.3 gallons per minute at its 1800 revolutions per minute maximum, through 1-1/2 inch NPT ports, at pressures to 75 pounds per square inch.
Everything about the design is aimed at getting thick liquid into the gears. The ports are enlarged so the product has an easier path in, the gears are helical and set at an angle so the tooth spaces fill progressively rather than all at once, and the horsepower requirement stays low enough that a modest motor will do the job. Construction is cast iron housings, hardened steel shafts and gears, iron journal bearings and Buna case sealing. This is the pump for molasses based liquid feed supplements, roofing compound, honey and similar heavy product, and it couples directly to a standard motor without the risers a taller pump would need.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Should the product be heated before starting?
On heavy product it helps a great deal. Warming the line first lets the pump turn against a thinner liquid and keeps the starting load off the drive and the seal.
Q: Why a mechanical seal rather than the lip sealed build?
Because the duty allows it. Where product sets up hard while the pump stands idle, the lip sealed build is the safer choice, since mechanical seal faces can stick together in a thickening liquid.
Q: Does the pump need to be run slowly?
It is designed to run at standard motor speed for its rated viscosity, which is the point of the series. Product much thicker than the rating still needs speed taken out of it.
Q: Why do iron bearings appear in a viscous liquid pump?
Iron stands up better to the loads and the marginal lubrication that come with thick product than a softer bearing material would.
