Roper Pump 1AM03 A Series Gear Pump, Foot Mounted without Relief Valve
The Roper 1AM03 is an A Series external gear pump in the foot mounted build, with a Buna mechanical shaft seal and no relief valve. The leading 1 in the figure number is exactly that: foot mounted, no relief valve. At size 03 the pump displaces 0.003 gallons per revolution, which gives 10.8 gallons per minute at its 3600 revolutions per minute maximum, through 3/4 inch NPT ports, at pressures to 300 pounds per square inch.
Leaving the relief valve out is a deliberate choice rather than an omission, and it suits a system that already has relief protection in the pipework, or one where a downstream valve can never be closed against the pump. Where neither is true, protection has to be added externally before the pump is put to work, because a positive displacement pump will keep raising pressure against a closed discharge until something gives. The foot mounting makes the pump independent of its driver, so it can be belt driven, coupled to a motor on a common base, or driven from an existing line shaft, provided the alignment is set properly once it is bolted down.

Q: Do I have to add a relief valve somewhere else?
If any valve downstream can be shut while the pump is running, yes. A positive displacement pump has no natural pressure limit and will keep building until a joint, a line or the drive fails.
Q: How do I align a foot mounted pump to its motor?
Bolt both down first, check for a rocking foot, then set the alignment with a dial indicator or a laser tool. Getting it close by eye and relying on a flexible coupling is how seals and bearings get used up early.
Q: Can it be belt driven?
Yes, and it is a common arrangement on foot mounted pumps. Keep the belt tension to the drive maker specification, because a side load pulled through the shaft is carried by the pump bearings.
Q: Which way should it turn?
