The Roper 18AM02-2B is an A Series external gear pump in the flange mounted configuration with an integral relief valve and a mechanical shaft seal. The figure number is readable straight off the pump: the leading 18 is flange mounting with a relief valve, the AM pair is the mechanical seal build, and the 02 is displacement. At that size the pump moves 0.002 gallons per revolution, which works out to 7.2 gallons per minute at its 3600 revolutions per minute maximum, through 3/8 inch NPT ports, at pressures to 300 pounds per square inch.
The small A Series pumps run at full motor speed, and the C-face flange mounting is what makes that practical. Bolting the pump to the motor face fixes the alignment by machining instead of by shimming, keeps the footprint tight and removes the coupling guard and baseplate from the installation entirely. Internally the design is simple on purpose: cast iron housing, ductile iron gears, bronze journal bearings lubricated by the liquid being pumped, and a helical tooth form that meshes progressively so the pump runs quietly. That liquid lubrication is also the one rule worth respecting. These pumps handle clean fluids and they must not be run dry, because the bearings and the seal both depend on the product for their film.

Q: What do the digits in the model number mean?
The first group gives mounting and whether a relief valve is fitted, the letter pair gives the shaft sealing method, and the digits after that give displacement. Read them off your pump plate and you have the whole build.
Q: How should the relief valve be set?
Against a gauge, with the pump running, at the pressure your system actually needs rather than at the pump maximum. Running continuously over the valve heats the liquid inside the pump and is not a way to control flow.
Q: Can this pump be driven by a gas engine instead of a motor?
It can be driven by anything that respects the speed limit and gives it a square, supported shaft connection. The flange mounting is designed around a C-face motor, so any other driver needs its own bracket and alignment.
Q: What suction protection does it need?
A strainer sized so it does not choke the inlet. Small gear pumps are quickly ruined by debris, and a starved suction does almost as much damage as grit does.
