Robbins & Myers 320-1499-000 416 Stainless Drive Shaft for Moyno 500 Models 331 to 344
The 320-1499-000 is the 416 stainless steel drive shaft for the Moyno 500 Models 331, 332, 333 and 344 with cast iron or nylon housings. It carries drive from the motor or coupling into the pump, running through the bearings and the shaft seal to the flexible joint that turns the rotor. Everything the pump delivers passes through it as torque.
Shafts also suffer at the drive end. Keyways spread, pin holes elongate and coupling bores wear oval, and any slack there lets the drive snatch instead of turning smoothly, which loads the joint and the rotor unevenly. 416 stainless steel resists corrosion well, so on most pumps it is mechanical damage rather than rust that ends a shaft. The 316 stainless builds of the same pumps take a different shaft, as does the 34411 packing gland build, so housing material is part of identifying the right one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What causes a shaft to break rather than wear?
Sudden overload, usually a pump started against a blocked discharge or a rotor seized in a swollen stator. If a shaft has sheared, find the cause before fitting the replacement or it will happen again.
Q: Is the same shaft used with packing and with a mechanical seal?
Not always. Pumps built for packing and pumps built for a mechanical seal can take different shafts, so the seal arrangement in your pump decides which part number applies.
Q: Can a grooved shaft be built up and reground?
It is possible but rarely economic at this size, and the repair has to hold concentricity at the bearing journals as well as at the seal face. A new shaft is usually cheaper than doing the job properly.
Q: Does fitting a new shaft need a press?
The bearings normally do. Work them onto the journals with even pressure rather than driving them by the outer race, which brinells the balls and gives a rebuilt pump a rumble from the first hour.
