Q: When should I choose a rebuild kit over an impeller kit?
When the pump has done several seasons, has been run dry, or is weeping as well as running weakly. An impeller kit suits a pump whose only symptom is reduced flow.
Q: Does the temperature rating change how I use the pump?
It widens the range the rubber parts stay serviceable across. It does not turn the pump into a hot liquid pump, and the duty cycle and dry running rules are unchanged.
Q: Why does a cold pump prime badly?
Cold stiffens the impeller vanes so they do not conform to the cam, and the pump cannot build the seal it needs to draw air out of the suction line. Parts rated for low temperature reduce that.
Q: Should I replace the shaft seal at the same time?
If the pump is weeping behind the head, yes. The seal is only accessible with the head off, so it is worth dealing with while you are already there.
