Proven Pump P138-12B Inline Fuse Holder
The Proven Pump P138-12B is the genuine inline fuse holder used in the DC power leads of the 12 volt utility transfer pumps. It carries the fuse that protects the wiring between the battery and the pump, which is the part of a portable DC setup most likely to be pinched, chafed or shorted.
A fuse holder earns its keep by failing safely, and it is worth replacing rather than bypassing when it stops doing so. The two things that go wrong are corrosion inside the holder, which raises resistance until the holder runs warm and the pump runs slowly, and a cracked or perished body that lets water in. Both are common on a pump that lives in a locker or a bilge. If a fuse holder is discolored, warm in use, or no longer grips the fuse firmly, replace it - and never be tempted to join the leads across it, because the fuse is the only thing standing between a chafed lead and a battery that can deliver hundreds of amps into it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I just bypass the fuse holder if it is corroded?
No. A battery can push an enormous current into a chafed lead, and the fuse is the only thing that stops that becoming a fire. Replace the holder rather than joining across it.
Q: Why does my pump run slowly with the old holder fitted?
Corrosion inside the holder adds resistance. The voltage the pump actually sees drops, it turns more slowly, and the holder itself runs warm - which is the clue.
Q: Where should the fuse be in the circuit?
As close to the battery as practical, so that the greatest possible length of lead is protected by it.
Q: Does the holder need to be waterproof?
It needs to be kept out of standing water and protected from spray. On a pump that lives in a bilge or a locker, mounting the holder high and keeping it dry does more for reliability than anything else.
