Check the shaft before ordering rather than after. On the impeller itself, look for cracking at the root of the vanes, vanes that stay curled instead of springing back, and any vane that is missing entirely - the last one means the pump was run dry, and it also means there are pieces of rubber somewhere downstream that need to be found.

Q: How do I tell whether my pump has a threaded shaft?
Take the cover off and look at the end of the shaft where the impeller sits. A threaded shaft carries a nut or a thread on its end rather than a plain parallel section with a key or a flat.
Q: What happens if I fit the wrong impeller for the shaft?
At best it will not seat and the cover will not close on it. At worst it runs loose on the shaft, which chews the bore out of the impeller and can damage the shaft as well.
Q: Why do flexible impellers fail so suddenly?
They rarely do. The vanes usually crack or take a set gradually and the pump slowly loses lift, and the sudden failures are almost always the result of a few seconds of dry running.
Q: Should I fit it dry?
No. Wet it with the liquid the pump will handle or a little glycerine first, which makes it far easier to work past the cam and protects the vanes on the first turn.
