Q: How is this different from buying an impeller on its own?
An impeller on its own is the right call when the rest of the head is in good order. This kit covers the parts that wear against each other, which is what you want if the pump has done real hours or has been run dry.
Q: How do I know the cam needs changing?
Look for a polished or grooved track where the impeller has been bearing on it. Once that surface is no longer smooth and continuous, a new impeller cannot seal against it.
Q: Do I need special tools?
No. The cover comes off with ordinary hand tools and the impeller is worked out and back in by hand, rotating it the correct way so the vanes lie in their running direction.
Q: Which way should the vanes lie when I fit the impeller?
They should trail in the direction the pump turns, so they are bending the way they will bend in service. Forcing them the wrong way sets the rubber against itself and shortens the life of the new impeller.
