Proven Pump 3360090 Buna-N Shaft Seal
The Proven Pump 3360090 is the genuine Buna-N shaft seal for the 360 and 365 Series utility transfer pumps. It sits where the motor shaft enters the pump head and keeps the liquid being pumped on the wet side of that wall, away from the bearing and the motor behind it.
This is the seal that decides whether a leak is a nuisance or a new pump. Buna-N hardens with age and heat, and once it has lost its flexibility it stops following the shaft and starts weeping. The first sign is usually a damp trail down the back of the pump head or a drip that appears only while the pump is running. Left alone, that liquid works its way along the shaft into the motor, and the motor is worth many times the seal. Replace the seal whenever the pump head is off, and inspect the shaft while you are there, because a scored shaft will cut a new seal quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: My pump drips only while it is running. Is that the seal?
Very likely. A tired shaft seal follows the shaft well enough to hold when everything is still and loses contact once the shaft turns and the head is under pressure.
Q: Can I fit a new seal onto a worn shaft?
Not with much hope. A groove or a ridge where the old seal ran gives the new lip nothing flat to follow, and it will weep again quickly. Check the shaft before you order.
Q: Is Buna-N the right material for what I am pumping?
It suits water, coolant, oils and diesel well. It is the wrong choice for strong acids, ketones and hot water, all of which attack it.
Q: Which way round does the seal fit?
The lip faces the liquid, so that pressure pushes it against the shaft rather than away from it. Note the orientation of the old one as it comes out.
