Work across the cover in a cross pattern in stages rather than pulling each screw down fully in turn.

It is if the scoring is deep. Grooves on the face the impeller runs against let water slip past the vanes and cost you flow.

Replace any that are corroded or have damaged heads. They are cheap and a snapped screw turns a short job into a long one.
