Q: What tools do I need?
A pair of correctly sized retaining ring pliers. Levering one out with a screwdriver bends it and can damage the groove.
Q: Does the ring have a right way round?
Many do. The stamped or chamfered face goes toward the load. Note the orientation of the old ring as it comes out.
Q: What happens if it is not fully seated?
It can pop out under load. The part it retains then moves, and the internal clearances that keep the pump working are lost.
Q: How do I check the groove?
Clean the salt out and look for rounding, widening or corrosion pitting. A damaged groove will not hold a new ring securely.
