The Onan 131-0162 Water Pump End Cover closes the wet end of the pump and holds the impeller and wearplate against their running faces. It is the part that comes off first for an impeller change, so it also takes the most handling of any component in the pump and its sealing face has to stay flat through repeated services.
Covers corrode from the inside out, distort if the screws are overtightened, and crack around the fastener bosses after enough services. It is if the scoring is deep. Grooves on the face the impeller runs against let water slip past the vanes and cost you flow.
Q: Should I replace the screws at the same time?
Replace any that are corroded or have damaged heads. They are cheap and a snapped screw turns a short job into a long one.
Q: How do I check the cover for distortion?
Lay the sealing face on a flat surface and try to rock it, then check for light under the edges. Any movement means it will not seal reliably.
Q: Why do cover screws keep loosening?
Usually because the gasket has taken a set or the cover face is dished, so the joint keeps relaxing. Replace both and retorque evenly.
