Onan 131-0160 Water Pump Impeller
Every gallon of cooling water that reaches the heat exchanger on your Onan set passes through the Onan 131-0160 Water Pump Impeller. The flexible vanes bend against the cam as the shaft turns, which creates the suction that pulls sea water up through the strainer and pushes it on through the exhaust elbow. It is the single most heavily loaded component in the pump and the one that sets the pump flow rate.
Dry running is what kills these impellers. Closed seacock, clogged strainer, an air leak on the suction side or a winter start with no water in the line will all cook the vanes in seconds. Fit the new impeller with a smear of glycerin or soapy water, turn it into the housing in the correct direction of rotation, and never run the set dry to prime it. Q: What should I lubricate the new impeller with?
Glycerin or plain soapy water. Petroleum grease and oil attack the vane compound and shorten its life.
Q: Which way does the impeller go in?
It is fitted so the vanes trail against the direction of shaft rotation. Rolling the vanes over as you press it home sets them the right way.
Q: What if a vane is missing when I pull the old one?
Do not close the pump up until you have found it. A loose vane travels to the heat exchanger inlet and restricts flow there instead.
Q: Can I reuse an impeller that has been sitting on the shelf?
A spare that has been stored flat and out of sunlight is fine. One that has been stored compressed or in a hot locker may have taken a set and should not be trusted.
