Close coupling a pump to a motor or a hydraulic mount removes the alignment problem from the installer and builds it into a casting instead. The Oberdorfer M2AD56 is that casting for its position in the range.
Alignment is the whole point of the part. An adapter that has been dropped, distorted or fitted with debris trapped in the register will hold the shafts out of line, and the seal and the bearing will both pay for it.
