Oberdorfer 9963 Shaft – OEM Pump Replacement Part
This is the genuine Oberdorfer 9963 shaft. Oberdorfer uses stainless steel shafts throughout its bronze pump range so that the one component permanently in contact with both the pumped fluid and the seal does not corrode.
Runout matters more than it looks. A shaft that is even slightly bent loads the seal unevenly through every revolution and shows up as a leak that comes and goes with speed.
Renew the seal whenever the shaft is renewed. The two work as a pair and there is nothing to gain from putting an old seal onto a new surface.

Q: Can a grooved shaft be built up and reused?
It can be done, but on a pump this size the cost of the work rarely beats the cost of a new shaft, and the repair has to be ground true afterwards.
Q: What causes a shaft to wear in the first place?
Abrasives in the pumped fluid working under the seal, dry running, and misalignment that loads one side of the seal harder than the other.
Q: Does alignment need checking after fitting?
Yes, on any pedestal or coupled installation. Misalignment is the fastest way to ruin the new shaft and the bearing with it.
Q: Should the bearing be replaced too?
If the shaft failed from corrosion or the bearing has run on a pitted seat, replace both. They will not last individually.
